A must-go stop on the Bali surf travel circuit

Nusa Lembongan

Nusa Lembongan is a small island off the southeast coast of Bali. It is one of three neighboring islands, the larger Nusa Penida, and the smaller Nusa Ceningan. Just like Bali, it is Hindu and the Lembonganese share same culture as the Balinese.

Nusa Lembongan is a quick boat trip from Bali. It has world-class waves and is a popular stop on the on surf travel circuit.

Nusa Lembongan has the best surf of the three islands. It has three main breaks, Shipwrecks, Lacerations, and Playgrounds.

Shipwrecks is the best wave in Nusa Lembongan. It is a world-class right hand reef break that gets bigger with the tide. The main peak has excellent barrel sections with fast walls. Watch out for rogue sets when the swell gets above 6 feet It is best surfed at mid to high tide at 3 to 6 feet.

Lacerations is more challenging than It is a fast right hand barrel that gets hollower as the tide drops. But do not surf the barrel too far at low tide, because it breaks on nothing but sharp shallow reef. It is best surfed at low tide at 2 to 5 feet.

Playgrounds is a fun and mellow wave compared to Shipwrecks or  It has a long left hand wave with open walls, and a short right hand wave that sometimes barrels. It is a short paddle from the beach. It is best surfed at low tide at 2 to 5 feet.

Nusa Ceningan

Nusa Ceningan is the smallest of the three islands, located between Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida. It is connected to Nusa Lembongan by a suspension bridge.

When there are no waves at Nusa Lembongan, take a short boat ride and surf Nusa Ceningan. Ceningans is a fun left hand reef break on the island. It attracts a lot of swell and is the best place to surf on small swells. It breaks underneath a cliffside temple and can only be reached by boat. On big swells, be careful of the strong currents and closeout waves. Locals have also spotted sharks in these waters. It is best surfed mid to high tide at 3 to 6 feet.
