The Best Surf in East Bali

East Bali

Level: Intermediate – Advance
Best months: October – April

When the waves aren’t good in the West during wet season – head to East Bali as they’ll be pumping. World-class waves with epic barrels can be found here when the conditions are right. Nusa Dua and Sanur are the most popular surf spots, but you can always find good surf at Serangan.

Nusa Dua

Nusa Dua is the rainy season version of Uluwatu. It attracts a lot of swell and has some of the biggest waves in all of Indonesia. The waves can be a big and powerful with rogue sets that come out of nowhere and drag surfers far down the reef.

Checking the waves from the beach can be deceiving. What looks like 6 to 8 feet surf from shore, can be 12 to 15 feet, triple overhead waves in person.

If you are not sure how big the waves are from shore, count how long the top of the wave takes to hit the water. The longer it takes, the bigger the wave.

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is in front of the Club Med Resort and is a good option when Nusa Dua is too big to surf. The wave is inconsistent and challenging to surf, but when the conditions are right it can have excellent barrels.

Serangan

Serangan was once a secluded island and secret surf spot only accessible by boat. But heavy development in the 1990s connected it to the mainland and turned it into a peninsula.

The waves at Serangan are similar to Kuta Beach, but on big swells it can produce powerful overhead barrels. There are several spots that break on all tides, so you can always find a good surf at Serangan.

Hyatt Reef

Hyatt Reef is a large stretch of reef located in front of the Bali Hyatt Resort. The break is far from perfect with too many shifting sections, but on a good swell at high tide the surf can be excellent.

There are two peaks at Hyatt Reef. The outside peak is shifty but can produce excellent barrels, and the inside peak is more consistent with a right hand barrel section.

Hyatt Reef is far out to sea and can have big waves. It can be surfed by intermediate surfers on a small swell at high tide. But on big swells it is for expert surfers only.

Sanur

Legend says that Sanur is the most perfect wave in Bali. But sometimes, legends are far from true. The truth is, Sanur is far from perfect and very inconsistent. It needs a big swell with perfect conditions to become legendary. And just like legendary Padang Padang, these conditions are rare. But when conditions are perfect, Sanur is said to be one of the best right hand waves in the world.

Sanur is a world-class reef break with long, fast rides and multiple barrel sections. It is important to know the tides when surfing Sanur. The waves break fast over sharp and shallow reef, and when the tide gets too low you will be surfing over dry reef with no exit.

Keramas

Keramas is a perfect right, on an island famous for its perfect lefts. Professional surfers from around the world fly to Keramas for international surf competitions or to shoot their latest surf movie.

On big swells, Keramas is a big and heavy wave for expert surfers only. It has very strong currents and surf that breaks over sharp and shallow reef.

Surfers who paddle out on big swells either come back surfing one of the best waves of their lives, or with broken bones and gaping reef cuts. On small swells at high tide, Keramas has excellent barrels and punchy, high-performance waves.
